I created d2 in February, 2024 motivated by the threat of a second Trump presidency. A strange feature of authoritarianism is that people don’t take it seriously enough until it’s too late. It’s a phenomena that’s been explored in works like Cabaret, and documented in many epicly short-sighted historical quotes underestimating the rise of fascism. I didn’t want to fall into this complacency, and more than anything, I didn’t want to wake up on November 6th, 2024 overwhelmed with regret.

Today, many people find it hard to believe that American democracy could be coming to an end, even though many of those same people would never have imagined that we would overturn Roe v Wade, pass a de facto Muslim ban, or that a mob would overrun the capital chanting for the Vice President to be hanged.

It’s unclear whether our democracy would survive another Trump presidency, and while I certainly won’t be giving up if he wins, there are a variety of ways it could be the beginning of the end.
